An Introduction to Acupuncture

By Dr. Danny Jui, ND

What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine which involves the insertion of extremely thin and sterilized needles into specific points on the body. The needles are then gently stimulated to trigger the body’s natural healing response.

History of Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been practiced for over 2000 years since its first documentation in the ancient Chinese medical text “Huang Di Nei Jing” (The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine). It continues to gain scientific validation through positive clinical outcomes and research data throughout the world today.

How Does Acupuncture Work?
Traditionally, acupuncture is based on the tenet that health is determined by a balanced flow of Qi or “Vital Energy” in the body.  According to traditional Chinese medical theory, Qi circulates in the body along 12 major energy pathways, called meridians, each linked to a specific internal organ system.  Disease is the result of blocked energy flow in these meridians.  Acupuncture needles are inserted along specific points in order to harmonize the flow of Qi and therefore restore health.

Scientifically, acupuncture has been shown to work through its local and systemic effects. Locally, acupuncture needles enhance local blood circulation, bringing nutrients to the area of concern and carrying out stagnant wastes. Systemically, acupuncture has been shown to regulate the production of neurotransmitters, hormones, and pain-relieving chemicals in the brain which in turn modulates the immune system to facilitate healing.

Benefits of Acupuncture
In 1979, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognized over 40 common health conditions responsive to acupuncture. These include musculoskeletal conditions, digestive concerns, female health issues, smoking cessation, migraines and headaches, anxiety and depression, stress, insomnia and chronic fatigue to name a few.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments will depend on the duration, severity, and nature of your health concern. Usually it requires 2-4 sessions to address acute situations and a series of 5 to 15 to resolve more chronic conditions. Some degenerative conditions may require many treatments over time.

Working with your Health Care Professional

Working with your naturopathic physician or acupuncturist, appropriate treatment protocols will be determined based on your specific situation.
